The 13th Three Shadows Photography Award is Calling for Submissions
On October 13, 2020, based on the considerations of public health safety and international travel restrictions, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre issued an announcement, temporarily halting the collection, exhibition, and judging processes of the "Three Shadows Photography Award." The "Three Shadows Photography Award" was thus put on hold, bidding a temporary farewell to all the creators and friends who have been supporting us. Today, we are ready to move forward. With boundless joy and anticipation, we are delighted to announce the relaunch of the "Three Shadows Photography Award," and the 13th "Three Shadows Photography Award Exhibition" will reunite with everyone in the spring of 2024!
Fifteen years ago, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre initiated the annual "Three Shadows Photography Award," inviting submissions of photography works from the general public. The awards aim to select artists and works with an independent spirit and artistic potential from the emerging trends in photography art. They seek to examine, categorize, and research contemporary Chinese photography, introducing cutting-edge Chinese photography to the wider public and promoting the development of contemporary Chinese photography. Since its inception, the awards have received support from various sectors of society and enthusiastic responses from photography creators. Over twelve years, the "Three Shadows Photography Award" has attracted nearly six thousand submissions, invited forty-five international experts as judges, organized exhibitions, and published corresponding catalogues. We have discovered more than two hundred young Chinese artists. Among them, eleven (groups of) artists have won the "Three Shadows Photography Award," ten artists have received the "Shiseido Photographer Award," four artists have received the United States "The Tierney Fellowship Award," one artist has received the "ALPA Award," two artists have received the "Media Attention Award," and two artists have received the "Luo Boren Outstanding Photographer Award." Many participating artists have achieved long-term development in their respective fields. Additionally, the "Three Shadows Photography Award" invites curators, artists, and critics from art institutions at home and abroad to form an international judging panel, visit China, closely observe the development of contemporary Chinese photography, and organize dialogues, workshops, portfolio review, and other public projects to share their latest research results and experiences with Chinese audiences.
The opening and award ceremonies of the "Three Shadows Photography Award" have been held each spring. The free blossoming of the two cherry trees, Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura, in the courtyard of Three Shadows has become the signal for our reunion with the Photography Award and symbolizes the debut of a new generation of photography artists.
The 13th "Three Shadows Photography Award" is now open for public submissions. Fifteen to twenty sets of works will be selected from the submissions and will be exhibited at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre (Beijing) in spring 2024. The judging and award ceremony will also be held on the opening day. The winner will receive a cash prize of 80,000 RMB (pre-tax).
We would like to express our gratitude to the artists, judges, art institutions, embassies, sponsors, and all those who have participated in and supported the "Three Shadows Photography Award”. We also extend our warm welcome to all individuals from various sectors of society to join us and support us. Let's join together to create a platform that generates new value, discover and support talented Chinese photographers, provide them with opportunities to speak out and communicate, and contribute to the healthy development of contemporary Chinese photography art.
