Since his student days, Gong Yue has been keenly attuned to questions of identity. As a community police officer, he has folded his day job and his art practice into a single, seamless pursuit: entering community life from a personal vantage point and recording individuals as they truly are, in the midst of working out who they are. His photography carries forward the medium’s great tradition of social observation. With a gaze that is gentle yet unrelenting, he has set out to portray an entire community — a vivid group portrait of grassroots urban China, textured with the grain of its era.
The camera begins with individuals and moves, naturally, to the community’s most basic unit: the family. Everyday scenes and small tendernesses are quietly captured — conversations over dinner, light falling across a living room, neighbors looking out for one another — stirring in many of us a warmth we had almost forgotten. As the project deepened, his lens turned to the groups that gather around shared passions; among familiar faces and shared memories, these images let people feel their connection to one another, and their belonging. And a community does not run itself: administrative services, infrastructure, the hum of local commerce — unglamorous, yes, but they are the quiet scaffolding that holds daily order and daily life together. Finally, following the thread of “the home that was,” he records the stories of residents displaced by demolition — preserving the footprints of a community’s growth, the turning of an era, and the new life taking shape between the old and the new. Taken together, these works read like a sociological archive in images: fragments of individual memory, and testimony to a city in transformation.
There are no grand pronouncements in Gong Yue’s photography, no manufactured drama — only a steady, even-tempered gaze trained on the ground we all share. His work reminds us that “community” was never an abstraction. It is a living picture woven from real people, warm households, companions in shared pursuits, and quiet guardians. Walking through this exhibition, every visitor may well catch a glimpse of themselves.
