Announcement|Temporary Suspension of the Three Shadows Photography Award

From the autumn call for entries, to the winter collection and the preliminary selection, to the opening, interviewing, voting and awarding in the following cherry  blossoms spring; from the "Points of Impact", "Confluence", "Myriad Visions", "Crossover", "Essential Impressions", "Formless", "Detachment", "Immeasurable", "Allegory", "Interlink", "Translation", to "Resonance", the Three Shadows Photography Award has been organized for twelve years. Now, after careful consideration, the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre decided to suspend the collection, exhibition and appraisal of the Three Shadows Photography Award(TSPA).

(Jury members and artists of the 2019 (11th) Three Shadows Photography Award in the exhibition hall)

In the second year of since the opening of the Three Shadows Photography Art Centreer, due to the lack of research-oriented photography galleries and departments in China and the absence of a platform for young photographers to show their creativity, the co-founders of Three Shadows Photography Art Centreer, Rong Rong &  & iInri, and the first Art Director, Zhang Li, decided to launch the Three Shadows Photography AwardTSPA, which is China's first photography award focusing on promoting contemporary photography and supporting creators of cutting-edgenew images. The award is open to the Chinese worldwide, and each year hundreds of submissions are preliminarily selected by a panel. Works by about twenty artists/ group artists  are shortlisted for the annual photography award exhibition. The shortlisted artists are invited to install and present their works in the Three Shadows exhibition hall according to their own vision. In front of their works, the artists are free to expound their creative ideas to an international jury composed of the heads of the top art institutions, artists and critics from home and abroad, East and West. Many international experts  were invited to join the international jury committee of the TSPAThree Shadows Photography Award, have visited China for the first time to have a close observation on the new force of Chinese contemporary photography through the Three Shadows Photography Award,TSPA, and to introduce their work and research the Chinese audience through lectures and dialogues. The Three Shadows Photography Award is more than an exhibition or a competition. It is a venue platform for artists and jury members to communicate and interact, and an important channel for Chinese young photographers to enter the international field.

(The German artist Hilla Becher, a juror of the 2012 Three Shadows Photography Award, was at the exhibition.)

Since its inception, The  Three Shadows Photography Award TSPA has received nearly 6,000 submissions from Chinese photographers, of whom 11 artists (groups) have become winners and were awarded 80,000 RMB, 10 artists were the Shiseido Photographer Prize winners, two artists received the Luo Bonian Award, one artist received the ALPA Award, four artists received the Tierney Fellowship, two artists received the Media Award. Meanwhile, thirteen catalogs of the Three Shadows Photography Award Exhibitions have been published with the same title as the exhibitions. The works of the finalists have been exhibited in Beijing, Xiamen, Datong, Xi'an, Padua (Italy) and other cities at home and abroad. Many award winners of the Three Shadows Photography Awardparticipant artists of the TSPA have already made their mark on the international stages, with works having been exhibited in high quality overseas institutions and collected by both eastern and western institutions and collectors. The Three Shadows Photography Award bears the testimony of the photography art community to the development of the young generation of Chinese photographers.

(The lecture by the international jury in 2018)

The outbreak and spread of this year's public health crisis has disrupted the daily life of millions of people. International travel bans and the closure of public spaces have greatly challenged the staging of international cultural events, and the Three Shadows Photography Award was not spared. The Resonance: 2020 the 12th Three Shadows Photography Award opened a month later than scheduled, and was completed with online meetings for interviews with artists and voting by the jury. However, we have to admit that the online experience of art is very different from the on venue viewing. The current digital and internet-based presentation is not enough to replace the sense of presence of encountering the artworks in person. The A4 paper size screen and the artist's dictation are far from the subjective and direct experience for the jury. To respect and treat each artist's creation and each judge's work with care, we announced to temporarily suspend the Three Shadows Photography Award before the international jury and artists can travel and communicate freely as before. To those who are interested in and care about the Three Shadows Photography Award, we look forward to seeing you again in the future.

(Voting for the 2016 (8th) Three Shadows Photography Award)
